Boomerang 2011 - Holyport All-Stars Report by Nick Pellew
Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 09:15AM We all arrived in Melbourne over the last 24 hours with the Knight and the Badger the last in, a mere 10 hrs or so before our first game. The first pics are of the club.
The last 3 pics are of the Daddy and the Knight.
The rest all managed a good practice with the Don and the BBC beating the Duke and the Daddy so conviningly that they have been put back into the possible parings despite the potential for marriage bust up!
There are about 35 teams although probable at least half are local. Hampton Court has 3 teams, the MCC 2 and the rest are scattered around the clubs. Many players are returning for the umteenth time and so the atmosphere is like a reunion.
The handicaps in use for the competition are singles ones which benefits most of us. We are in a group with 5 other teams although we only play 4 of them
The first round was held today and was against a team from Ballarat . Most of there team were in the 28 to 35 handicap arae so they had to give us points.
The Daddy and the Knight won 8-4
The Don and the Duke won 8-4
The BBC and the Badger won 8-3
The Badger and the Knight lost 8-4
The games look quite clearcut but in fact many went to 40-40 and the result flatters us. However the Badger and the Knight looked tired in their last game and would probably have come through as winners if played again.
Our next group match is on Monday agaist the Hampton Court Banshees. This team includes Sue Haswell who looks a complete bandit on a handicap of 34.5. This match will tell us how we really stand.
We then play another local team on Thursday and a further one on Saturday.
At the same time there is a mix in Handicap doubles also done in groups and this has also started.
